Introduction/Brief History
People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD) was founded in 1994 with more than 200 members, the majority of which were attorneys, scholars, clergymen, etc. The key founder of PSPD was Wonsun Park, a human rights lawyer. PSPD is a civil organization dedicated to promoting justice and human rights in Korea through the participation of citizens. Korea's democracy was developing rapidly after the historic June Struggle of Citizens in 1987. But the remnants of the dictatorial government of the pre-1987 era were prevalent in the public arena. As a progressive civic group, PSPD watched closely the abuse of power to enhance justice in Korea. Today, it is the most famous civic advocacy organization in Korea.
