Multicultural Teacher Training

Multicultural teacher training is the link between the goals of multicultural theory and multicultural practice, translating theory and concepts into real-world practice for teachers in training. Through institutional change, multicultural training attempts to improve schooling by fostering the following: (1) changes in the curriculum; (2) inclusion of diverse classroom teaching materials; (3) increased awareness of teaching and learning styles, and their impact on diverse learners; (4) paradigm shifts among teachers and administrators; and (5) changes in the goals and norms of schools themselves. Multicultural teacher training developed as a response to meeting the goals of multicultural education. It is estimated that by the year 2020, students of color will represent nearly half of the elementary and high school population in the United States (U.S.).
