Mandated Reporters
Professionals who work with children are required by law to report suspected child abuse or neglect; these professionals are known as mandated reporters. These professionals work in medical, law enforcement, and educational fields and are required by law to report any suspicion of child abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities. In addition to the responsibilities required by their professions, they are also required to act as a reporter of child abuse or neglect.
Among the many professionals who act as mandated reporters are: social workers, professional counselors or psychologists, medical professionals, teachers, law enforcement professionals, and district attorneys. Mandated reporters who fail to make the appropriate reports when child abuse or neglect is suspected can be held liable by both the civil and criminal legal system.
