P-selectin belongs to the selectins, a family of vascular adhesion molecules. It is expressed mainly on platelets and endothelial cells and promotes rolling, adhesion and transmigration of leukocytes. P-selectin is a key molecule in leukocyte endothelial interactions especially modulating inflammatory pathways, wound healing and defense against infection. P-selectin acts as a signal transducer resulting in an increase of intracellular calcium and alteration of the cellular phenotype.
