Introduction

 
Kosher certification is generally both extensive and reliable, yet entirely privately administered.  Indeed, under United States law (as will be shown) this is necessary because of the doctrine of separation of Church and State enshrined in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and “incorporated” as against the several states by the Fourteenth Amendment. Yet, it works far better than government certification of the health and safety of food, drugs, and the like. Several structural reasons for this are suggested and those reasons strongly suggest that a similar approach would work far better than the current method of state certification in these areas.  Also mentioned are other domain-specific, non-structural differences between
