Definition
A nonbenzodiazepine (imidazopyridine structure) hypnotic drug utilized mainly with insomnia and other sleep disorders, but also used in patients with brain injury. It is chemically distinct from previous generations of hypnotics such as the barbiturates (e.g., Seconal) and benzodiazepines (e.g., Halcion, Restoril). It potentiates (increases amounts of) GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It was introduced to the public in the early 1990s by G.D. Searle & Company, and is a controlled drug (U.S. Schedule IV).
Description

Its safety and effectiveness in children has not been confirmed, and should be used only
